The Birds

Daphne du Maurier

Smelling notes by Denise Auberque

When I opened the book it made a popping sound as the spine cracked. Could this have released a specific odour? It smells of regency polished wood furniture and dried out play-do. There’s also a hint of animal fat. The sheen on a healthy cat. The book smells opulent. It makes me think of National Trust properties in Spring.
