Antlers of Water

ed. by Kathleen Jamie

Smelling notes by Steph Haxton

Book Condition: new. A series of essays, photographs and poems. First sniff brings sawdust- sweet and rich. This is a surprise as the book is a series of essays on Scotland’s natural world’, inciting readers to ‘look outside’, so I didn’t expect sawdust. But this IS fresh new paper; maybe not so random then? The next sniff is even more abstruse; clean sheets! But not the crisp smell of cool cotton. Here is a dusky almost dusty note; brushed, a musty nap. It’s winceyette. I shake my head to shed such a random sensation. Closing my eyes I pick another page, breathe deeply and savour a thick, quilted eiderdown which I think is a dark burgundy red. An unexpected olfactory journey perhaps to a Highland B and B in the late 60s. But why?
